3 Deep Clean Jobs to Do in January
January is the month to show some TLC to your home’s hard(est)-working appliances. AKA, the dishwasher, washing machine, and fridge. Well-deserved, especially after all that holiday madness—and, let’s be honest, last year’s neglect 😅 Give them a deep clean now, and you’ll thank yourself.
If a new year and new cleaning routine sounds like your thing, you’ve landed the right spot! We’ll be talking about 3 deep clean jobs to do in January—and, ideally, schedule every month after that.
Dishwasher
Your dishwasher’s your best friend for post-dinner cleanup. But forgetting to clean your dishwasher means it’s not cleaning your dishes as well as it should. If your dishwasher is smelling funky or leaving streaks on your glassware—it’s a sign that it’s crying out for help. And it’s about time you give it a deep clean!
How to Deep Clean Your Dishwasher
Remove the filter (usually a round piece at the bottom of your dishwasher) and any other parts that keep it in place. Give all of the parts a good scrub in warm, soapy water and leave to dry.
Check the spray arms for clogs. In some models, you’ll be able to remove them before cleaning, so check your manual. If you notice any gunk, use a toothpick or tiny brush to clear it.
Check the bottom of the dishwasher for any dirt or food debris and remove.
Check and fill up the dishwasher salt and rinse aid if needed.
Clean around the seal of your dishwasher door. A microfibre cloth and warm soapy water works well. Don’t use vinegar here as it can degrade the rubber.
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack or a couple of lemons in the centre (just be sure to remove the pips) and then run it empty on the hottest cycle.
Give the outside a thorough wipe down while the cycle runs.
Washing Machine
Your washing machine’s job is to clean your clothes. But who’s cleaning the washer? (Spoiler: it should be you or us!). Over time, this appliance can gather dirt debris and gunk—which results in everything from odours to mold. This will also make your machine less effective.
How to Deep Clean Your Washing Machine
Wipe down the rubber seal around the door with a damp cloth.
Pull out the top drawer and wash it in warm soapy water. If the build up is particularly bad (either mould or staining) you can add some bleach and leave it to soak before using a brush to clean all of the hard to reach nooks.
Some machines have a filter at the bottom, so untwist, remove debris and give it a clean in warm soapy water.
Use a small blob of Cif and a thin bristled brush to clean the nodules on the underside (where the water comes out) of the drawer opening.
Put all of the cleaned parts back (ensure they are secure!) and run your washing machine on an empty cycle at the hottest setting.
Tip: leave the door open between washes to allow the drum to dry out and reduce the growth of mould
Fridge
Your fridge is easily your most-used kitchen appliance. It’s always humming, the door is swung open and closed throughout the day, and the shelves are stocked (and restocked) with your family’s favourite foods. And to keep those foods hygienic and extend the lifespan of your produce, it’s important to deep clean the fridge.
How to Deep Clean Your Fridge
Empty the fridge—also take this as an opportunity to throw out expired condiments.
Take a duster along the top to remove build-up.
Remove all shelves and drawers and wash them in warm, soapy water. Use Cif and a damp Scrub Daddy for those sticky stubborn stains and leave to dry.
While its empty, prepare a bowl of warm soapy water with a splash of Zoflora and use a microfibre cloth to wipe down the interior. Don’t forget the door seals—they’re also magnets for crumbs.
Dry down the shelves with a tea towel. You can use a little bit of glass cleaner if needed.
Wipe down the fridge exterior with a surface-safe cleanser. Also, be sure to disinfect the handle!
